FAQ - Water & Effluent Analysis

What is meant by ppm or ppb?

All water and effluent test results and standards have a unit associated with them. These units give the amount of the pollutant per unit of water. The most common unit is the milligram per litre (mg/L) alias parts per million (ppm), which expresses the milligrams of a pollutant in every litre of water. Some laboratories prefer to use. Some contaminants that can be measured in very small quantities are reported in micrograms per litre (∝g/L), which is identical to a part per billion (ppb).

Keep in mind that concentrations expressed in mg/L (or ppm) can be converted to ∝g/L (or ppb) by multiplying by 1,000, and that ∝g/L (or ppb) can be converted to mg/L (or ppm) by dividing by 1,000.
